I feel for the residents of Anthony, N.M. and their recent gang-related losses in the recent two months. As a gang prevention-intervention expert, I recognize gang presence in the area to be greater than what is admitted by most residents and authorities.
From my best estimates, the problem is set to grow incredibly yet.
Gang affiliation is growing unabated, especially among teen and pre-teen youths in the El Paso, Southern New Mexico and Ciudad Juárez region. What affects one specific community affects all the others generally.
I am asking a coalition of forces that includes Anthony parents, educators, churches, social service groups, community leaders and law enforcement to unite. The community needs to assess and understand the threat and recognize that a united front can work to combat gang growth and violence. Effective strategies in working against gang affiliation require multi-pronged efforts in Prevention, Education, Intervention and Suppression.
We cannot leave the problem to be borne by law enforcement alone. Parents should be the biggest and strongest component in a proposed coalition. The area should also consider municipal incorporation as a means of gaining monetary support and manpower for its many needs.
